The city owes much of its appearance to Henry the Lion, who completely rebuilt it after a fire in 1157. Lübeck's Impressive Churches Many significant buildings and old town houses testify to the glorious history of the economic powerhouse. The cathedral from 1247 is located in downtown Lübeck and is the oldest church there. Like St. Peter's and St. Mary's churches, it was largely destroyed during World War II and rebuilt. The third largest church in Germany is the impressive St. Mary's Church, located behind the town hall. This significant building in the center was built in Brick Gothic style. Although smaller, the churches St. Aegidien, St. Jakobi, and St. Petri are still impressive. St. Peter's Church is a popular exhibition and event center. If you climb the 544 steps to the viewing platform at the top of the tower, you will enjoy a beautiful view of Lübeck's old town. Another popular attraction is the Lübeck Town Hall, built between 1230 and 1308, which still serves as the administrative seat of the Hanseatic city. With its ornate halls, Renaissance arcades, and magnificent facade, the building is one of the largest and most beautiful town halls in Germany. In the Middle Ages, the city was entered through four gates: the Holsten Gate, the Hüxter Gate, the Castle Gate, and the Mill Gate. The first mentioned is the landmark and once adorned the 50-mark bill. In the north, the second still existing Castle Gate is located. If you come from the north into the city, you still have to pass through the arch from 1444 today.
